Why was a genus of ferns named after Lady Gaga?

The genus of ferns, Gaga, is named after the singer Lady Gaga. This naming was inspired by the discovery of a sequence of paired nitrogenous bases “G-A-G-A” in the DNA of one of the species within this genus.

Another source of inspiration came from the singer’s performance at one of the Grammy Awards ceremonies, where she appeared in a green dress with prominent shoulders. This reminded botanists of one of the stages in the life cycle of ferns – the gametophyte.

Additionally, the scientists who named the genus wanted to acknowledge Lady Gaga’s outspoken support for equality and individuality, values that resonate within the scientific community.

The naming also aims to highlight the importance of biodiversity and the unique characteristics of these ferns. By drawing a connection to a pop culture icon, the botanists hope to raise awareness and interest in the study and conservation of plant species.
